EDIB Council


The purpose of the EDIB (Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging) Council is to advise and assist the development and progress of EDIB efforts for Juilliard in alignment with the institution’s mission and strategic plan. Made up of Juilliard faculty, staff, students, administration, and alumni, the EDIB Council works in collaboration with the Office of EDIB to address EDIB needs and opportunities in service to the Juilliard community.

The EDIB Council has three primary roles:

  • Modeling EDIB leadership and best practices, council members intentionally integrate culturally responsive EDIB practices into their own areas of work and influence as EBID advocates and ambassadors;
  • Advising the Office of EDIB and EDIB initiatives across Juilliard, council members bring data from their respective areas to shape the formation of EDIB goals and initiatives that are most responsive to the needs of the Juilliard community; and
  • Supporting development of EDIB institutional strategy, council members enlist their own expertise and community awareness toward the creation of high-quality programming and conscientious policies for the Juilliard community.


Under the leadership of President Damian Woetzel, the EDIB Taskforce (now EDIB Council) was assembled in June 2019 to spearhead the work and values of EDIB at Juilliard. The taskforce originally comprised staff and faculty members from across the school who met monthly to explore best practices, review recommendations, and develop strategies that connected current efforts with ongoing planning and development. The EDIB Taskforce was central to developing the EDIB Foundational Workshop and the EDIB pillar of the Juilliard Strategic Plan. After the initial charge of the taskforce was deemed complete, a new iteration of the group was suggested in fall 2021. With expanded representation and a renewed charge, the EDIB Council launched in fall 2022.


Members of the EDIB Council serve as advisors or representatives with the Office of EDIB providing administrative leadership.

  • Administrative Leadership—The Office of EDIB holds the administrative responsibilities for the council.
  • Advisors—Advisors play an integral role in the formation of institution-wide EDIB strategy, policy, and programming guided by their awareness of institutional climate and priorities. Advisors meet monthly and serve for the length of their institutional appointments.
  • Representatives—Representatives provide essential input from their divisions and departments to help shape EDIB strategy, policy, and programming. They circulate EDIB updates and opportunities through their divisions, departments, and institutional networks. Representatives meet as part of the full council twice per semester. Representatives serve two-year terms.
  • Working Groups—Working groups may be established to assess, provide feedback, and make recommendations for the development of EDIB efforts in particular priority areas.
